How To Celebrate Africa Podcast Day '23
February's African audio, radio & podcast celebrations are here 🎙
Happy Africa Podcast Month!
You may have noticed we've been a little quiet over here and on our socials - entering the year with ease. Here's a quick look at what we've been up to:
Our co-founder Melissa Mbugua was in Cape Town, South Africa for the Radio Workshop - Audio Producer Workshop. Speaking of Radio Workshop, congrats are in order for their first Ambies nomination for Best Documentary Podcast for I Will Not Grow Old Here. It is believed to be the first Ambies nomination for an African podcast. We wish them all the best - winners will be announced March 7, 2023
While the other half of Africa Podfest, Josephine Karianjahi featured on last month's Rise and Shine with award winning Ugandan podcast pro Lulu Jemimah speaking about the realities, opportunities or challenges of international collabrations in Audio. Have a listen here: Youtube
How to Celebrate Africa Podcast Day 2023
Thank you for your comments, emails, messages, PMs and DMs on the cancellation of the event we had planned for 12th February 2023. Amid the supportive and encouraging messages, we also received a number of questions about what comes next, and most importantly, we know you are keen to find out how you can celebrate Africa Podcast Day 2023.
There are two important ways to celebrate Africa Podcast Day
a) Virtually:
Take this opportunity to do something new for your African podcast or favourite African podcaster. Listen to a new episode, let them know you appreciate their efforts, give them feedback via podcast platforms, and all in the celebration of African podcasting.
We have prepared a set of Africa Podcast Day 2023 graphics which you can download BELOW
You can download these graphics and create original posts about what African podcasting means to you - for us podcasting is freedom.
Don’t forget to mention and tag your favourite African podcast storytellers and podcasts in the process. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #AfricaPodcastDay2023

b) In Person:
Nairobi, Kenya - Africa Media Festival, the first of its kind for African media is happening next week. Baraza Media Lab’s Africa Media Festival is doing something very special for podcast creation as part of Africa’s media ecosystem. From supporting podcast research to hosting African podcasts on a global stage, the firm is expanding the stage for African podcasters, and we are here for it!
Overall, this is an unmissable event with opportunities to visit key stops in Kenya’s media ecosystem (pre-festival), two days of powerful sessions with movers and shakers in African media and on 16th and 17th February, there will be a Pop-Up Garage Event (Learn more HERE) hosted by PRX and featuring podcast workshops, live shows, and a podcast garage pitch opportunity.
Notably, there will be a Podcasting Hackathon during Africa Media Festival. The theme is Access to Podcasts and Sustainability for Podcasters in the African context. It will be an exciting opportunity for podcasters, media professionals and techies looking to expand their skills in solution development, within the Kenyan audio industry.
We are delighted that our cofounder, Melissa Mbugua will be speaking at Africa Media Festival. Check out the other speakers here
A good number of you African podcasters and audio professionals have already reached out to let us know they registered to take part in the Hackathon.
The Podcasting Hackathon is a collaboration between Baraza Media Lab and PRX.
